Welcome to the home page of the Harrisburg Chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA-HBG). The purpose of this web site is to provide information about chapter activities to our members across Central Pennsylvania.

- Data Mining by Dr. Jerome Friedman

When: Thursday, April 5th 2007

Dr. Jerome Friedman's bio

Dr. Friedman is one of the world's leading researchers in statistics and data mining. He has been a Professor of Statistics at Stanford University for nearly 20 years and has published on a wide range of data-mining topics including nearest neighbor classification, logistical regressions, and high dimensional data analysis. His primary research interest is in the area of machine learning. Click here for his website.

- Regression Modeling Course by Dr. Frank Harrell

Details: This talk by Dr. Frank Harrell from Vanderbilt University, School of Medicine, will cover methods of model variation and auxillary topics such as modeling interaction surfaces, efficiently utilizing partial covariable data by using multiple imputation, variable selection, overly influential observations, collinearity, and shrinkage. Fall 2005 Events

- Workshop, Data Analysis For Science Fair Projects

When: Saturday, October 29, 2005, 1:00 to 5:00pm
Where: Olmstead Building Auditorium, Penn State Harrisburg, Middletown, PA
Details: This free workshop is designed for middle school and junior high students and teachers. It is being sponsored by PCTM and will be presented by Dr. Tom Short of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The workshop will be aimed at guiding students toward statistical reasoning in project design, data presentation, analysis, and interpretation. There is no fee, but pre-registration is requested. - Data Analysis for Student Science Research Projects

When: Wednesday, November 30, 2005, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Room Wild Rose B, Hershey Lodge & Convention Center, West Chocolate Ave. & University Drive, Hershey, PA 17033
Session: #69
Details: This is a half-day course targeted towards teachers. This course will be lead by instructors from the ASA's "Science Education and Quantitative Literacy (SEAQL)" project, and will also focus on statistical thinking and tools to improve student projects. This course is a part of the Pennsylvania State Teacher's Association (PTSA) convention title "Action of Science" which will be held from 30th Nov (11/30/2005) to 2nd Dec (12/02/2005).
